Sociologist Frank Furedi says traditional parties no longer represent many people around the world. “They feel that the legacy parties have lost contact with the aspirations that people have in their everyday lives,” Mr Furedi told News24 host Jaimee Rogers. “Populism now creates a demand-led dynamic. “It’s not that people have become more extreme or more radical; I think what has happened is that for the first time people are finding their voice and they’re confident enough to say ‘enough is enough’. “Populist parties can emerge very, very fast because of the underlying demand for them.”
