Donald Trump faces uphill battle as Republicans distance themselves from the President

The Australian Washington correspondent Joe Kelly analyses US President Donald Trump’s “defensive” movements with the midterms fast approaching. “Donald Trump is very much on the political defensive here… he’s trying to preserve the Republican majorities in both US House and US Senate,” Mr Kelly told News24. “The most important issue of this general election is the cost of living…you can make a reasonable argument that Donald Trump faces an uphill battle on that issue. “The midterms can be seen as a test of whether Trump is going to be an electoral liability or whether he’s still a positive for the Republicans. “We are seeing some Republicans now trying to distance themselves from the US president… there have been a couple Republicans in Iowa who have tried to distance themselves from the president.”
