Australian flag burners in for a rude awakening as Coalition push for tough new penalties

Former New South Wales Police minister David Elliott claims the Australian flag should be treated with the same respect as war memorials. “The flag is something that I think we need to be very, very careful about,” Mr Elliot told News24 host Jaimee Rogers. “Just because it’s offensive doesn’t mean it should be an offence. “The symbol of the Australian flag belongs to the people of Australia, so we probably should be treating it the same way that we treat our war memorials.”
