Nepal-Tibet floods is like a 'Himalayan tsunami': Expert

The catastrophic landslide event near the Nepal-Tibet border on Wednesday (Aug 26) is a "cascading hazard" that's likened to a "Himalayan tsunami". Dr Badal Pokharel, head of data science and research at SumClimate in Sydney, described the recent flash floods as a cascading hazard involving a detached ice block from over 7,000 meters, triggering a rockslide that dammed the river, causing a sudden water outburst. She emphasised that no single cause has been confirmed yet and that this is a complex, multi-hazard, transboundary event potentially affecting Nepal, Tibet, and India. She stresses the urgent need for collaborative early warning systems, real-time monitoring of glaciers, rainfall, and ground movement, and safer infrastructure for local communities.
