Indonesia is reviving exports of long-tailed macaques for biomedical research, setting a 2026 quota of 1,920 animals and opening a new breeding facility in Lampung. Officials say the trade could generate income for local communities and help manage human-wildlife conflicts, with the US currently the main export market. But the push has reignited debate over the trade in long-tailed macaques, whose global population is estimated to have fallen around 40 per cent over four decades.
