Indonesia sanctions six firms over forest fires in Kalimantan

Indonesia has slapped sanctions on six firms and frozen the licence of another, after President Prabowo Subianto vowed to pursue those responsible for wildfires in parts of Sumatra and Kalimantan. Firefighters are continuing to battle the blazes that have triggered a cross-border haze crisis. Forestry Ministry data shows nearly 94,000 hectares of land burned across Indonesia last month. Authorities in South Sumatra – the province with the highest number of wildfire hotspots – are turning to spiritual measures, praying for rain to quell the blazes that have scorched vast swathes of forests and peatland.
