Indian government steps up measures as sugar prices remain elevated

India is one of the world's biggest producers of sugar and also its largest consumer. But prices have risen sharply in recent weeks, just as demand is expected to pick up for the festive season. The government has now asked sugar mills to ensure adequate supplies and keep prices at "reasonable" levels - the latest in a series of measures aimed at cooling the market.
