Coordinating Minister for Public Services Chan Chun Sing said the salary adjustments will give the government more flexibility to bring people from diverse backgrounds into political service. It will also allow more room for the prime minister to differentiate ministers' salaries. Ministerial pay is 65% fixed and 35% variable. The variable depends on individual performance and national outcomes. In all, the increase in ministerial salaries and MP allowances will cost the government about S$11.6 million more annually.
