Singapore is looking to strengthen its haze laws. Sustainability and the Environment Minister Grace Fu says the aim is to address enforcement gaps and strengthen corporate accountability. It is to also enhance its ability to investigate and take decisive action against those responsible for the transboundary haze. The National Environment Agency has issued notices to 10 Singapore-registered companies and 10 more in Indonesia. Ms Fu says the recent haze is preventable and unacceptable, and companies must take responsibility for the environmental impact of their operations and supply chains. She adds that enforcing the law across borders presents the challenges of securing cooperation from companies outside Singapore and gathering the needed evidence. To discuss more on how laws can be strengthened, we were joined by Dr Tan-Soo Jie-Sheng. He’s the Director of the Institute for Environment and Sustainability at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy.
