Around 200 schools, kindergartens and nurseries in Batu Pahat in Johor, Malaysia have been ordered to close after worsening haze pushed air quality close to the “very unhealthy” level on Wednesday (Oct 7). Batu Pahat recorded the country's highest API reading on Tuesday, reaching 197 by 6pm, as Johor remained among the states worst affected by the haze. Johor is the first state in Peninsular Malaysia to announce temporary school closures in the current haze episode. Batu Pahat has consistently recorded some of the country's highest unhealthy API readings since Sunday. The Johor government has also raised concerns with Indonesia over the worsening transboundary haze. CNA's Muhammad Ruzaini Mohamed Rashid reports.
