Australia tightens visa rules for students, backpackers as part of migration crackdown

Australia is tightening student and backpacker visa rules, as the government moves to bring down migration levels. Foreign students can no longer bring in partners and their children while studying, although the new rules will not apply to PhD students from Pacific and ASEAN countries. The changes come amid growing concerns over pressure on housing and infrastructure, as well as calls from the right-wing party, One Nation, for much deeper migration cuts. Overseas students contribute more than A$50 billion a year to Australia's economy, while the disappearance of thousands of short-term visa holders could lead to losses of millions of dollars in spending.
