Chilean penguins wear special medical vests

Researchers in Chile are testing specially designed recovery vests to help injured Humboldt penguins heal. The snug red suits are threaded with copper and zinc and protect wounds from being pecked or disturbed while the birds recover. The technology has previously been used on injured dogs and cats, and researchers say the penguins have tolerated the vests well. Copper and zinc woven into the fabric can help limit bacterial and fungal growth, while zinc may also support tissue repair.
