Young inventors in Gaza turn wartime challenges into technology solutions

More than 100 young people are taking part in a Youth Technology Hackathon in Gaza City, presenting more than 45 projects designed to address challenges in their communities. Among them is a robot developed by 14-year-old Bassam Harara that can enter damaged buildings and inspect them remotely, potentially reducing risks to people. Another team has developed a gesture-controlled robot to assist elderly people and those with disabilities with everyday tasks. Other projects focus on smart farming, water treatment and technology-based solutions to shortages affecting daily life. But the young inventors face major obstacles in turning their ideas into working projects, including unreliable electricity and the high cost and limited availability of mechatronics equipment. Despite those constraints, the hackathon is giving a new generation of Gazans a space to experiment, build and imagine a different future.
