Bangkok floods displace thousands as waters remain slow to recede

More than 2,000 people are sheltering at a displacement centre in Bangkok’s eastern suburb of Lat Krabang after severe flooding left surrounding areas under water. The centre has expanded rapidly, with only a few hundred people there 24 hours earlier, while more residents continue to arrive. Although heavy rains have stopped, floodwaters have not receded and remain as high as one metre in some areas. The displaced are being provided with food, bedding, mosquito nets and medical supplies, but officials warn they may have to remain at the centre for up to seven days.
