Al Jazeera's senior political analyst Marwan Bishara says the US midterm results show Americans "think differently about the Middle East" and no longer want more wars or a doubling down on the conflict with Iran. Speaking after Democrats took control of Congress, Bishara argued that President Donald Trump – "a political animal" with a sharp sense of public sentiment – had already grasped that aid to Israel "is no longer popular in America", reflected in his pledge to halt US aid to Israel from the end of the year. He compared the scale of the result to the Democratic rout of 1994, calling it "a tsunami", and warned that both Trump and the Democratic leadership in Congress remain stuck in "the mindset of the past". Bishara said voters are rejecting not just the war on Iran but the web of relationships Trump has built, demanding "real change towards the Middle East, and notably towards Israel". He suggested the outcome is bad news for Netanyahu's government rather than Israel itself, and urged newly elected members of Congress to use their leverage now: "Don't get involved with war against Iran before January 20th."
