US CENTCOM spokesman Captain Tim Hawkins discusses the security of two vital Middle East shipping routes: the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab al-Mandab Strait. Hawkins says the Strait of Hormuz remains open to commercial traffic despite pressure from Iran, with the US military facilitating the movement of millions of barrels of oil. He also says primary shipping lanes have been cleared of naval mines. The CENTCOM spokesman describes the US blockade on Iran as “highly effective” and says US forces are targeting military assets, including the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), while adhering to the laws of armed conflict. Hawkins also discusses US military cooperation with Saudi Arabia and efforts to monitor Houthi movements near the Bab al-Mandab Strait amid the conflict in Yemen.
