Latest update: US strikes on Iran: Civilian deaths reported as tensions escalate

US forces have launched strikes on Iran’s southern coast in the biggest flare-up in hostilities in more than a month. US Central Command says it targeted Iranian military sites, including air defence systems, radar, maritime assets, mine-laying capabilities and communications facilities. Iranian officials say the strikes also hit a wedding gathering in southern Iran, killing at least five civilians and injuring dozens more. Al Jazeera has not independently verified all details of the reported casualties. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps says it has launched retaliatory attacks against US military assets in the region, including targets it says are in Jordan and Bahrain. Jordan says several missiles were intercepted, while Kuwait has also reported Iranian drone and missile activity. The escalation has raised concerns that the conflict could spread across the Gulf, with governments in the region placing forces and civilians on heightened alert.
