Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Navy (IRGC Navy) has issued statements about four incidents involving supertankers in the Strait of Hormuz. The IRGC says two of the supertankers, each carrying two million barrels of crude oil, hit mines because they were navigating through a part of the waterway that is forbidden and unauthorised by the Iranian authorities. Iran says any ship or tanker crossing the strait should coordinate in advance with the IRGC and the authorities managing the strait. Al Jazeera’s Mohamed Vall, reporting from Tehran, says it is a strong message to the US that Iran remains in control of the Strait of Hormuz and will not relinquish it.
