How 9/11 transformed US foreign policy over 25 years: Analysis

Twenty-five years after the September 11 attacks, Richard Weitz, a senior fellow at the NATO Defence College and security analyst at Wikistrat, reflects on that day and its lasting impact. He recalls the confusion after the first plane hit, before the scale of the attacks became clear once the second plane struck and the Pentagon was hit. Weitz says the biggest change since has been the shift in US foreign policy, from the hopeful, domestically focused 1990s to an extraordinarily interventionist era. The US invasion of Afghanistan was understandable, he says, but the subsequent war in Iraq created problems, including with Iran, that persist today. He also argues the US "dropped the ball" on China and Russia, allowing both to become potential adversaries.
