Commemorations have taken place across the US to mark the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, with ceremonies held at the sites targeted that day in New York and at the Pentagon. Families of victims gathered at the 9/11 Memorial at Ground Zero, alongside Vice President JD Vance and four former US presidents. The memorial site, once buried in rubble that took eight months to clear and years to rebuild, also marked a first this year: a moment of silence for the many more who have died since from illnesses linked to the attacks. Security was tight, with New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani joining the vice president and former presidents at the ceremony. Al Jazeera's Kristen Saloomey reports from New York.
