Voters in Germany’s Mecklenburg-Vorpommern are preparing to go to the polls in a state election that could have repercussions beyond the region. Correspondent Dominic Kane reports from Rostock on the contest between the Social Democratic Party (SPD), led by Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig, and the rising far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD). Schwesig is highlighting affordability measures, including free daycare centres, while the AfD leads in opinion polls. Despite the challenge, the SPD remains competitive in the race. Although Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has a relatively small population, the election result is expected to carry significant political weight in Berlin and across Germany.
