Conflict in northern Ethiopia: Drone Strike Hits Major TV Station in Tigray region
Al Jazeera EnglishA drone strike has damaged the building housing Tigrai TV in Mekelle, the capital of Ethiopia’s Tigray region, as fighting between the Ethiopian military, Tigrayan forces and allied armed groups intensifies. Tigrayan forces say they have seized airports and launched attacks into the neighbouring Afar and Amhara regions, while the Ethiopian military says it has killed more than 270 TPLF fighters in a counter-offensive. Communications across Tigray have been severely disrupted since Friday, raising fears of a renewed conflict similar to the two-year civil war that ended in 2022 and caused a major humanitarian crisis. It remains unclear who is responsible for the communications blackout or the drone strike on Tigrai TV, which the federal government suspended last week. Ethiopia has also accused Eritrea, Sudan and Egypt of supporting armed groups fighting its forces, allegations those countries have denied. The developments are fuelling concerns about a wider regional escalation amid Sudan’s civil war and tensions over Ethiopia’s access to the Red Sea. Al Jazeera’s Malcolm Webb reports from Nairobi.
