At least 64 killed as two high-speed trains collide in central Spain

At least 64 people have been killed after two high-speed trains collided near Toledo in central Spain, on the railway line connecting Madrid to Seville in the southern Andalusia region. Footage shows wreckage scattered across an embankment, while rail services between Madrid and Andalusia have been suspended. The collision follows another deadly crash on the same line in January that killed 46 people. Graham Keeley, a journalist and writer covering Spain, told Al Jazeera that the latest disaster comes at a difficult time for the government, with an election just over a month away. He said authorities had promised nationwide railway safety inspections following January's crash and reduced train speeds on major high-speed routes, but those checks appeared not to have been completed before the latest collision. Keeley said preliminary indications suggested human error may have caused the crash, although no official inquiry had reached that conclusion. He explained that the collision occurred in a rural area south of Toledo and that the trains were carrying commuters travelling from Madrid to Seville, as well as international tourists, including Americans and passengers from the Philippines.
