Zuckerberg: Meta's AI glasses must balance fashion and function

Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, has emphasized that the company's new line of AI-powered smart glasses must successfully blend fashion with advanced functionality to encourage widespread adoption. The new glasses, which start at $299, are a significant push into wearable technology for Meta, developed in collaboration with eyewear giant EssilorLuxottica.

Zuckerberg articulated that the primary challenge is not merely integrating more AI capabilities but designing glasses that people are "proud to wear" and find comfortable. He drew a parallel to the fashion industry, suggesting that future wearable platforms will increasingly merge with fashion trends, moving away from the perception of being solely gaming accessories. This perspective is shaping Meta's strategy as competitors like Google and Snap also venture into AI-powered eyewear.

He noted that working on smart glasses has exposed him to different priorities compared to the software world, learning from EssilorLuxottica about brand building and design. Zuckerberg contrasted his current fashion interests with his past preference for Adidas slides in the early 2000s. He believes that for any wearable device, whether on the wrist or face, comfort and aesthetic appeal are paramount for user acceptance, especially as rivals like Snap have faced criticism for clunky and expensive designs.
