President Hichilema's re-election solidifies his mandate to pursue economic reforms, but opposition claims of irregularities and concerns raised by observers could impact Zambia's political stability and international perception of its democratic processes.
Hakainde Hichilema has been re-elected as President of Zambia for a second five-year term, securing 60% of the vote according to official results announced by the Electoral Commission of Zambia. His closest challenger, Brian Mundubile, garnered 38% of the votes, with other candidates trailing significantly. The election process was marked by controversy, as Mundubile alleged voting irregularities and claimed his home was raided by armed personnel, though he provided no evidence. Hichilema, in his victory statement, emphasized Zambia's commitment to peaceful democratic processes and pledged to work for all citizens. His supporters celebrated the win in the capital, Lusaka. Regional and international observers described election day as largely peaceful but raised concerns about late electoral reforms and media access, with the EU mission suggesting campaign restrictions may have created an uneven contest. Hichilema's administration aims to double the economy, create jobs, and expand opportunities during his second term.
