The initiative aims to improve public access to factual information about the arms industry, a complex and often opaque sector, by leveraging the reach of Wikipedia.
A group of Wikipedia editors, including seasoned volunteers and new recruits, recently participated in a wikithon in London focused on improving information about the arms industry. The event, organized by fellows from the n-Space programme at Somerset House Studios, aimed to enhance the quality and organization of publicly available information on the topic, adhering strictly to Wikipedia's guidelines against original research and the drawing of conclusions.
Co-founder Agnes Cameron highlighted the challenge of navigating potential conflicts of interest while ensuring factual accuracy, emphasizing that the initiative is about disseminating factual information rather than campaigning. The wikithon also seeks to address criticisms of Wikipedia's historical biases, such as a lack of diversity in editors and geographical focus, by drawing in a broader range of participants.
Newcomers expressed a desire to use Wikipedia to demystify complex geopolitics and counter narratives from powerful entities. The ease of contributing to Wikipedia was noted as empowering, with participants respecting the platform's commitment to rigor. Future sessions are planned, with aspirations to establish a formal WikiProject dedicated to the arms industry, potentially aligning with the active WikiProject Military history.
