Senator Mark Warner (D-Va.) voiced his support for Jay Clayton, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, to be the next Director of National Intelligence, stating he possesses the "right temperament" for the role. Warner's comments came amid ongoing concerns regarding the temporary appointment of Bill Pulte, the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) Director, to the DNI position.
Warner indicated that Clayton could have been nominated a week earlier, which would have prevented the lapse in Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA). He described Pulte as "grossly unqualified" and noted that some House Republicans and Senate Democrats had opposed an extension of FISA due to Pulte's nomination. Concerns were raised about Pulte allegedly using mortgage records to target political opponents of Donald Trump.
The Virginia senator plans to question Clayton about his strategies for the DNI role and his commitment to ethical standards. Warner specifically mentioned ensuring Clayton would uphold election integrity and avoid actions similar to those of current DNI Tulsi Gabbard, who he accused of interfering in domestic election activities by seizing ballots in Fulton County.
Warner expressed his hope that Clayton could be confirmed this week, potentially allowing him to replace Gabbard before Pulte's temporary appointment begins on June 19. Gabbard had initially planned to stay in her position until June 30, but Trump indicated Pulte would assume the role sooner.
