Venezuela frees 131 prisoners, US calls it step toward reconciliation

Venezuelan authorities announced the release of 131 individuals detained for political reasons, a move that the U.S. government described as a crucial step toward reconciliation. The releases were reportedly agreed upon by the republic's courts at the request of the Public Ministry, following an evaluation of cases by the government's Program for Peace and Democratic Coexistence.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that over 1,046 Venezuelans have been freed since January 3, emphasizing the importance of this measure within a broader three-phase plan for Venezuela's stabilization. This plan includes economic recovery, political reconciliation, and a peaceful transition.

The releases are occurring in the context of an amnesty law sanctioned on February 19, intended for the mass release of opposition figures, unionists, journalists, students, protesters, and human rights activists. The government maintains that those detained are accused of criminal acts and conspiracy, denying the existence of political prisoners.

However, Foro Penal, a civil organization that monitors the rights of those deprived of liberty in Venezuela, reported that as of August 10, 391 individuals remained detained for political motivations.
