The U.S. Treasury Department has removed 84 individuals and entities from its sanctions lists as part of a "modernization" effort aimed at streamlining programs and focusing on current national security and foreign policy priorities. The announcement by the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) included the removal of the Korea Tangun Trading Corp. (KTTC), a North Korean firm previously sanctioned in 2009 for its involvement in supporting Pyongyang's weapons of mass destruction programs.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced the sanctions modernization initiative in May, stating its goal is to ensure that U.S. sanctions remain targeted, effective, and aligned with U.S. economic, foreign policy, and national security priorities. The removed targets include deceased individuals, defunct entities, and those sanctioned decades ago, which are no longer considered priorities.
The KTTC is also known by several other names, including Korea Kuwolsan Trading Corp., the Second Academy of Natural Sciences Foreign Affairs Bureau, and Korea Ryenhap 2 Trading Corp.
