Federal authorities announced the seizure of 13 internet domains that the U.S. Justice Department stated were used by fake consulting firms to recruit current or former U.S. government and military employees to provide information to suspected Chinese agents. The FBI affidavit indicated these websites used fraudulent or stolen identities and AI-generated photographs to appear legitimate, advertising generic consulting jobs. Applicants were offered money for reports and sensitive information, with operators allegedly using cryptocurrency to hide their identities and ties to Chinese intelligence services.
Law enforcement officials identified the websites through information from individuals who reported suspicious interactions, such as being paid via cryptocurrency or unusual online payment systems. The FBI believes additional websites may be involved and is seeking public assistance in identifying them.
The announcement follows a recent warning from the Five Eyes intelligence alliance (Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the U.K., and the U.S.) about China's increasing use of job platforms to target personnel for classified or sensitive information. Spies for Chinese military intelligence have reportedly posed as representatives of private businesses or think tanks, advertising bogus jobs and pressuring candidates for non-public data.
A spokesperson for the Chinese embassy in Washington dismissed the espionage allegations as "entirely fabricated" and "malicious slander."
