Ukrainian law enforcement agencies have uncovered an alleged plot to frame Oleksandr Shyrshyn, a former battalion commander of the 47th Separate Mechanized Brigade, with fabricated evidence of drug possession.
According to the State Bureau of Investigation (DBR) and the Prosecutor General's Office, three former law enforcement officers, now serving in a Ukrainian army brigade, allegedly conspired with unidentified individuals to illegally monitor Shyrshyn and gather confidential information about him. The goal was reportedly to discredit him and prosecute him based on false evidence.
Shyrshyn himself stated on Facebook that cannabis was planted in his car on August 28, in what he believes was an attempt to implicate him in illegal drug activities. He described how the suspects allegedly broke into his vehicle overnight, planted approximately 30 zip-lock bags containing cannabis and PVP, a synthetic stimulant, and then alerted patrol police and the Military Law Enforcement Service the following day.
During a subsequent police stop and search, the drugs were found. Shyrshyn asserted that the substances were planted and that he had been under surveillance. He noted the presence of small gram scales alongside the cannabis, suggesting an intent to accuse him of drug distribution. Shyrshyn told the outlet Babel that suspicious individuals resembling Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) officers were present during the search.
Investigators have reportedly reconstructed the sequence of events, from the illegal information gathering and tracking to the break-in and planting of the drugs. The three suspects have been charged with offenses including illegal entry, unlawful collection of confidential information, illegal drug trafficking, and aiding an attempted prosecution of an innocent person through fabricated evidence. The investigation is ongoing to identify other potential accomplices.
Shyrshyn had previously been critical of Ukraine's senior military leadership in May 2025, during Oleksandr Syrskyi's tenure as commander-in-chief. Syrskyi, who was dismissed on July 22, 2026, had declared Shyrshyn "undisciplined." Shyrshyn suggested the current drug-planting incident might be connected to past conflicts with units directly subordinate to Syrskyi. Media investigations into regiments Shyrshyn was associated with have previously surfaced allegations of harsh treatment of soldiers and high casualty rates.
