Ukraine's General Staff announced on October 14 that Russia has lost 1,557,350 troops since the full-scale invasion began on February 24, 2022. This figure includes 1,650 Russian casualties reported over the preceding day.
The General Staff also detailed significant equipment losses for Russia, including 12,414 tanks, 25,535 armored combat vehicles, and 162,789 vehicles and fuel tanks. Other reported losses include 51,195 artillery systems, 2,212 multiple-launch rocket systems, 1,704 air defense systems, 443 aircraft, and 356 helicopters.
Ukraine has not disclosed its own casualty figures, citing operational secrecy. However, independent Western think-tank reports, such as those from the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), suggest that Russian casualties are substantially higher than Ukraine's, with estimates of the ratio ranging from 2.5:1 to 2:1. A January 2026 CSIS report estimated Ukrainian casualties between 500,000 and 600,000 from February 2022 to December 2025, with 100,000 to 140,000 killed in action.
In February, President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that at least 55,000 Ukrainian soldiers had been killed in action, with significant numbers also missing. The intensity of Russian drone attacks and ongoing fighting makes retrieving and confirming the identities of fallen Ukrainian soldiers difficult.
