Ukraine launched a drone attack on Russian-occupied Crimea, reportedly hitting energy infrastructure and exacerbating existing power outages. The extent of the damage and the severity of the new outages remain unclear, as Kyiv continues its campaign to isolate the peninsula.
The strikes underscore Ukraine's strategy to degrade Russia's logistical capabilities and isolate occupied territories, potentially impacting Russia's military operations and control over Crimea.
Ukraine's military reportedly launched a drone attack on Russian-occupied Crimea overnight on June 25, striking energy infrastructure on the peninsula. This latest strike comes as Crimea's energy grid has been under strain due to widespread power outages that began on June 23, leaving approximately half of the peninsula without electricity. Videos posted online appear to show a significant power outage in Simferopol following the reported drone strike, and explosions were also heard near the Balaklava Power Plant in Sevastopol. The full extent of the damage and the severity of the new outages are not yet clear, and Ukraine's military has not officially commented on the operation. Kyiv has been systematically targeting Russian military and industrial facilities in occupied territories, with a recent focus on Crimea. Ukraine aims to isolate the peninsula from mainland Russia by striking energy facilities and supply chains, a strategy described as a "middle strike" campaign using mid-range drones. Ukraine's Security Service has stated its forces will continue to make Crimea a zone of "constant losses" for Russia until they withdraw. Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedoov has indicated that Ukraine's drone campaign is effectively turning the peninsula into an "island."
