The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported on August 7 that Russia has lost approximately 1,455,420 troops since the beginning of its full-scale invasion on February 24, 2022. This figure includes 1,210 casualties suffered by Russian forces over the past day. The report also detailed significant equipment losses for Russia, including 12,247 tanks, 25,098 armored combat vehicles, 131,068 vehicles and fuel tanks, 47,522 artillery systems, 2,008 multiple launch rocket systems, 1,550 air defense systems, 439 aircraft, 354 helicopters, 447,855 unmanned aerial vehicles, 2,152 unmanned ground systems, 34 ships and boats, and two submarines. Ukraine's General Staff has not disclosed its own losses during the full-scale invasion, citing operational secrecy. Independent Western think-tank reports, such as one from the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), agree that Russian casualties significantly surpass Ukraine's, estimating the ratio to be "roughly 2.5:1 or 2:1." A January 2026 CSIS report projected that Ukraine likely suffered between 500,000 and 600,000 casualties from February 2022 to December 2025, with an estimated 100,000 to 140,000 killed in action. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky told France TV on February 4 that at least 55,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed in action since the war began, in addition to a considerable number missing in action. The intensity of Russian drones and fighting makes it difficult for Ukraine to retrieve bodies for DNA confirmation.
