The UK government has implemented a temporary ban on the sale of disposable barbecues, citing them as a significant risk to public safety amidst severe drought and heatwave conditions. The Department for Business, Innovation, Science and Trade stated that these products have been implicated in numerous serious wildfires over the summer months and cannot be considered safe.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham emphasized the extreme fire risk, describing Britain as a 'tinderbox' and urging the public to refrain from lighting any outdoor fires. He noted that while not all current fires are linked to disposable barbecues, some are likely caused by them. Retailers will receive official guidance on the ban, which will remain under review.
The decision follows discussions at an emergency Cobra meeting. Prior to the government's mandate, several major retailers and supermarkets had already voluntarily stopped selling disposable barbecues as part of an agreement with fire chiefs, which stipulated sales suspension during imminent extreme heat events or upon reasonable requests from local councils.
