Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) has restarted alumina production at its Al Taweelah refinery in Abu Dhabi, following a suspension due to Iranian attacks. The company expects output to reach 50% of capacity within days and full production capability by the end of 2026.
The restart of EGA's Al Taweelah alumina refinery is significant for global aluminium supply, as the facility is a key producer and its previous suspension impacted the market. The resumption of operations signals a stabilization of supply chains in the region.
Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) has restarted alumina production at its Al Taweelah refinery in Abu Dhabi, with output expected to reach approximately 50% of capacity within days. The refinery's operations were suspended on March 28 after Iranian attacks disrupted the Al Taweelah industrial complex. EGA resumed hydrate production, an intermediate step in the alumina refining process, on June 24. The company anticipates having the technical capability to return to full production by the end of 2026. In 2025, the Al Taweelah refinery produced 2.4 million tonnes of alumina, meeting about 46% of EGA's needs. Separately, EGA announced on July 2 that it had restarted 89 of the 1,262 reduction cells at its Al Taweelah smelter and will gradually increase hot metal production as more cells are restored.
