President Donald Trump has unveiled a new design for the United States passport, featuring his own portrait and text from the Declaration of Independence. The State Department announced that this limited-edition commemorative passport, dubbed the 'patriot passport', will be issued starting July 6, 2026, to mark America's 250th anniversary, while supplies last.
The updated design includes a three-quarter-length portrait of Trump by White House photographer Daniel Torok, which replaces a previous stern headshot. The portrait is surrounded by text from the Declaration of Independence and Trump's signature. The facing page displays an image of the founding fathers signing the declaration, based on John Trumbull's painting. The passport also features a 'Freedom 250' gold flag on the back cover, with Trump's signature in black and '250' in gold.
Plans for the passport and a related commemorative coin have drawn criticism from Democratic lawmakers. Senators Elizabeth Warren and Ron Wyden called for the coin project to be halted, citing concerns about the origin of the gold used by the U.S. Mint and stating the coin is 'more befitting a monarchy than a democracy'. California Governor Gavin Newsom had previously mocked the passport plan with a mock-up of a driver's license featuring his own face.
