US President Donald Trump said on November 6 that Stephen Miller, his deputy chief of staff, would become his new chief of staff, replacing Susie Wiles, according to a Reuters report. Trump announced the change in a post on Truth Social, saying Wiles had done an "outstanding job" and would move to the "Trump Political Operation". The change takes effect on Monday.
Miller has been a close ally of the president and served as a senior adviser during Trump's first administration. He is described as the architect of Trump's hard-line immigration policy.
Wiles said in a statement that being on Trump's team was "the honor of a lifetime". "I'm so proud to have been a part of what we've accomplished together from securing our border and cutting taxes to strengthening our economy and putting America First," she said. "While my role may be changing, my commitment to the President and the mission never will."
Wiles, 69, is seen as among the most powerful figures in the administration and is particularly close to the president, the report says. Asked earlier this month whether Wiles could be replaced soon, Trump said there was "zero chance", adding that "Susie is here and she's gonna be here for a long time". Wiles announced in September, six months after her diagnosis, that she was in remission from cancer.
The report by Reuters did not name the political operation Wiles would join or give the calendar date of the Monday on which the change takes effect. The Guardian also reported the appointment, describing Wiles as the first woman to hold the chief of staff role and saying she steps down on Monday.
