Washington, Oct 28 (Reuters) - US President Donald Trump on Wednesday determined that imported robotics and industrial machinery present national security risks. However, he decided against imposing immediate tariffs, instead instructing officials to engage in talks with foreign governments regarding import volumes. This decision aims to shield US manufacturers, who depend on foreign imports for many types of robotics and industrial machinery, from immediate tariff increases, while maintaining the possibility of future duties if negotiations prove unsuccessful. The probe into imported robotics and industrial machinery, which includes machine tools, autoclaves, industrial ovens, and laser and water-cutting tools, was initiated in September 2025. In July, the US Federal Communications Commission had already prohibited the import of new models of Chinese robots and power inverters, though existing models are still permitted.
