Kenyan President William Ruto defended the US construction of an Ebola quarantine facility at Laikipia Air Base, calling it the 'right thing' to do. The 50-bed facility aims to house Americans exposed to the virus, as outbreaks spread from DRC to Uganda. The project faces protests and court orders, with at least two deaths reported during demonstrations.
The construction of a US Ebola quarantine facility in Kenya highlights the global health security challenges posed by infectious disease outbreaks and the geopolitical considerations involved in international cooperation on health infrastructure.
Kenyan President William Ruto has publicly endorsed his government's decision to permit the United States to establish an Ebola quarantine facility within Kenya. Ruto stated that the decision was the 'right thing' to do, emphasizing that refusing the request would be 'inhuman.' This comes as satellite imagery indicates the U.S. government is proceeding rapidly with the construction of the facility at the Laikipia Air Base in central Kenya. The facility, which will include a 50-bed unit, is intended to house American citizens who may have been exposed to the Ebola virus. The outbreak, which has infected hundreds in the Democratic Republic of Congo, has also spread to Uganda, with 16 cases reported there. Despite Ruto's support, the project has faced opposition, including protests in Nanyuki, where at least two people were killed earlier in the week, and court orders that initially blocked the work. The U.S. embassy in Nairobi has stated it is collaborating with the Kenyan government to address objections.
