T-Mobile opens India tech center, plans to hire 1,000 by 2027

T-Mobile has inaugurated its global capability center (GCC) in Hyderabad, India, with plans to employ nearly 1,000 people by 2027. The new facility, located in the capital of Telangana state, has leased 250,000 square feet of space. The center will focus on building advanced capabilities in software engineering, DevOps, product development, data analytics, and cybersecurity. Chandra Gupta, vice president of information technology at the tech center, noted that Hyderabad offers valuable technology talent, innovation capabilities, and an established ecosystem. According to a Nasscom-Zinnov report, two-thirds of new GCCs in India choose either Bengaluru or Hyderabad. This expansion reflects the evolution of GCCs in India from low-cost outsourcing hubs to integral local offices supporting global parent organizations. T-Mobile shares edged lower following the announcement, though analysts suggest this is short-term uncertainty. The company has already hired over 500 employees at the facility, which is positioned as a strategic technology and innovation hub supporting global product development, rather than a traditional back-office operation. The expansion aligns with a broader trend of multinational corporations establishing large-scale engineering and innovation hubs in India, with approximately 50 new GCCs launched in India during the first half of 2025 alone.
