Sweden has chosen Rolls-Royce SMR to build three small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs) on the Värö Peninsula, marking a significant step in the British engineering group's ambition to become a leading supplier of the technology in Europe. This contract represents Sweden's first new nuclear power plant in over 40 years and is considered a major multi-billion pound export win for the UK.
The deal follows a rigorous selection process that began in 2022, with Rolls-Royce SMR selected by Videberg Kraft as its partner. The "Videberg Project" aims to support industries and households in southern Sweden. The partnership with utility Vattenfall and developer Kärnfull Next is viewed as one of the most advanced opportunities for SMR deployment outside the UK.
The UK government lauded the agreement, stating it will support thousands of skilled jobs, strengthen supply chains, and deepen the UK-Sweden partnership. Rolls-Royce's CEO, Tufan Erginbilgic, highlighted the selection as reinforcing Rolls-Royce SMR's status as the only company with multiple contractual commitments to deliver SMR units in Europe. This announcement follows similar deals with the Czech CEZ Group and Great British Energy – Nuclear (GBE-N) for projects in the Czech Republic and the UK, respectively.
