STOCKHOLM, Sweden – Swedish prosecutors have charged a 34-year-old man with attempted espionage for Russia, alleging he sought to disclose highly classified information to Russian intelligence services. The man, who previously worked in the Swedish armed forces, has been detained since January and denies the charges.
According to prosecutor Mats Ljungqvist, the suspect attempted to pass on classified information by traveling to Moscow in November 2025 to meet with representatives of the Russian intelligence and security service. The Swedish Security Service (SEPO) has also detained the individual on suspicion of conspiracy to commit murder in Moscow in December 2025.
Media reports indicate the man is a former IT consultant for Sweden’s Armed Forces, having worked with them from 2018 until 2022. Authorities believe the espionage activities may have been ongoing since 2022. Swedish Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer confirmed the government's involvement due to national security implications.
The charged man will stand trial in Stockholm beginning June 15. The Russian embassy in Stockholm did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
