Surgeon struck off after botched operation left patient in severe pain

Dr. Yasser Adly Abdel Rahman, an NHS locum surgeon, has been struck off the medical register following a botched emergency bowel procedure that left a patient in "uncontrollable pain." The operation, performed on August 25, 2020, at the Royal Oldham Hospital, resulted in the patient's bowel contents being re-deposited into his stomach, creating a dangerous "closed loop" system. This error was described by a General Medical Council expert witness as "not known to man" and "as bad as it gets," and the patient required a second operation to correct the mistake. Despite the severity of the error and concerns raised by the patient's parents and other medical staff, Dr. Rahman reportedly did not consider that something had gone wrong surgically. He claimed to be a "scapegoat" and the victim of a "witch hunt." The Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service (MPTS) had previously imposed restrictions on his work in July 2021, but Dr. Rahman breached these conditions by securing a locum position in Ireland in February 2022. The MPTS concluded that his misconduct was "fundamentally incompatible with continued registration" and subsequently erased him from the medical register.
