A SpaceX rocket's upper stage, which had been drifting in space for over a year after launching two lunar landers, has crashed into the Moon. Scientists reported the inevitable impact occurred on Wednesday near the Einstein Crater at approximately 5,400 mph.
While visual confirmation of the resulting crater is pending, astrophysicist Jonathan McDowell stated with certainty that the rocket is now in pieces on the lunar surface. He noted that observations showed the stage heading directly for the moon, and even an asteroid strike would not have significantly altered its course.
NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter is expected to provide photographic evidence of the impact site next week. This event is seen as a unique opportunity for scientists to study crater formation and debris distribution, offering valuable data for planetary geology. The incident also highlights concerns about increasing space debris in lunar orbit as more missions are planned.
SpaceX is reportedly working with NASA to prevent future collisions, with company representative Julianna Scheiman attributing the trajectory to a combination of solar activity and gravity. This marks another instance of human-made debris impacting the Moon, following a similar event involving a Chinese rocket in 2022.
