Scientists have discovered a vast whale graveyard, located up to 7 kilometers below the surface in the southeastern Indian Ocean, which is supporting a thriving ecosystem of marine life. The site, the deepest and oldest of its kind found to date, spans the largest area and contains fossils, including whale skulls, with the oldest bones dating back 5.3 million years.
Researchers explored the graveyard during submersible trips in 2023, identifying communities of jellyfish, tubeworms, brittle stars, sea cucumbers, squat lobsters, and saltwater clams feeding on the ancient carcasses. Many of these species may be previously undocumented. The unique preservation of the bones is attributed to their density, the extreme depth of the ocean floor, and a light mineral coating that may have prevented degradation.
Scientists theorize that the whales may have died from natural causes, exhaustion from deep-sea diving, or were funneled to the site by the area's V-shaped topography. The discovery is significant for understanding how life adapts to extreme environments characterized by high pressure, low light, and limited oxygen.
