Russia has suffered 301,030 military losses, killed and wounded, since the beginning of 2026, according to a Sept. 15 statement from Ukraine's General Staff. This figure comes as the summer campaign on the battlefield in Ukraine concludes, with total Russian losses now exceeding 1.5 million since the start of the full-scale invasion.
The General Staff stated that the nearly 300,000 losses since the start of 2026 are roughly equivalent to the personnel strength of 150 motorized rifle regiments, estimating 2,000 troops per regiment. These significant losses are attributed to effective combat operations by the Ukrainian Defense Forces.
Since the beginning of 2026, Russian forces have incurred approximately 30,000 casualties per month. The highest losses were recorded during the three summer months, totaling 124,170 military casualties. July alone saw a record 42,860 casualties, the highest monthly toll since the war began, with August also exceeding 40,000.
An electronic warfare operator identified only as 'Strada' told the Kyiv Independent that these high casualties are primarily linked to Russian tactics, including deploying infantry in waves to overwhelm Ukrainian positions. 'Strada' noted that fighting intensifies in the summer, leading to more assaults and higher casualties, and that Moscow's willingness to sacrifice troops for small territorial gains is a factor. However, 'Strada' added that these constant losses are gradually affecting the quality of personnel, training, and the ability to form combat-ready units.
