A photograph of Pope Leo XIV with a 7-year-old boy during his visit to Barcelona's Sagrada Familia has gone viral, sparking an online search for the child's family. The image, captured by Associated Press photographer Emilio Morenatti, shows the Pope and the boy smiling at each other while holding hands.
Morenatti, a two-time Pulitzer Prize winner, described the moment as one that should "transmit a sensation, evoke an emotion and hold the viewer's attention long enough to generate a thought." He felt compelled to share the photo beyond AP clients, posting it on X (formerly Twitter) in hopes of finding the boy's parents to give them a print.
The boy, Joaquim, and his parents, Montse Martínez and her husband, were among the 40,000 faithful gathered for the Pope's prayer vigil. The family, devout followers of Antoni Gaudí, had prayed for tickets to the event. A security guard noticed their baby and handed him to the Pope, who blessed the child. The guard then brought Joaquim, who was initially too emotional to speak, to the Pope.
Morenatti managed to find a unique vantage point for the shot by standing on a chair amidst the crowd, using his lens at maximum zoom and aperture to ensure both faces were sharp and the framing was clean. He immediately felt he had captured the image he envisioned.
The family discovered the photo on the website of the local newspaper La Vanguardia and used ChatGPT to find Morenatti's contact information. They reached out via Instagram, and a phone call quickly followed, leading to a swift reunion between the photographer and the family. The family plans to proudly display the printed photograph in their home outside Barcelona.
