Poland has delayed the transfer of additional MiG-29 fighter jets to Ukraine as negotiations concerning the transfer of Ukrainian military technology to Poland are still ongoing, according to Polish Deputy Defense Minister Cezary Tomczyk. Tomczyk stated that Warsaw is ready to provide the Soviet-era aircraft once an agreement on technology cooperation is finalized.
Tomczyk explained that Poland is interested in acquiring Ukrainian expertise and technology, particularly in the field of unmanned systems, to enhance its own drone capabilities. He indicated that the fighter jet deal would proceed successfully if this technology transfer issue could be resolved.
Warsaw has previously committed to transferring its remaining MiG-29 fighter jets to Ukraine. These aircraft, which entered service with the Polish Air Force in 1989, are being phased out and replaced by newer models. Poland had already approved the transfer of nine MiG-29s earlier this year, with the previous Polish government having delivered the last batch.
Poland has been a supporter of Ukraine since Russia's invasion in 2022, providing military equipment and political backing. The delay in the jet transfer occurs amidst recent strains in Polish-Ukrainian relations, stemming from Ukraine's decision to name a military unit after the Ukrainian Insurgent Army, a World War II-era nationalist group with a controversial legacy in Poland.
