Pentagon pushes AI development despite security concerns

He suggested that the Pentagon could play a more proactive role in risk evaluation but has thus far avoided this responsibility.

Congress is currently deliberating on measures to establish guardrails for the military's use of AI. These proposals, part of the annual defense policy legislation expected to be enacted this year, include a new review process to ensure that autonomous systems and AI capabilities prioritize "human judgment" in all decisions. Additionally, new security standards and guidance for AI agents integrated into military systems are under consideration.

Senator Mike Rounds (R-S.D.), who chairs the Senate Armed Services Committee's cybersecurity panel, views these proposals as a positive initial step toward regulating military AI. Nevertheless, the legislative timeline, with provisions likely not becoming law until December, is a point of concern for many lawmakers worried about the rapid evolution of these technologies. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries has urged Congress to "immediately" pass new AI development regulations, citing fears that unchecked advancement of the technology could pose an existential threat.

Defense Department officials, alongside President Donald Trump, have countered these dire predictions, maintaining that human control over advanced AI tools remains paramount.
